Crypto Bear Market: Key Reasons Why Cryptos Are Falling

Why is crypto down? There is no single cause. The crypto bear market that began after Bitcoin’s October 2025 peak is being driven by several forces at once: Fed rate hikes, outflows from spot ETFs, leveraged traders getting liquidated, and oil-driven inflation fears.

Bitcoin traded near $83,500 early on October 14, about 34% below its record. Altcoins are down much further.

This guide explains each driver with the numbers behind it, and sets the downturn beside past bear markets. It makes no price predictions.

Markets moved to price a Fed pause after the jobs report. One prediction market showed roughly an 85% chance of an October hold on October 2. If you are new to reading those odds, our guide to how prediction markets work is the place to start.

Are We in a Crypto Bear Market?

By the most common rule, yes. A bear market is a drop of 20% or more from a peak, and Bitcoin sits about 34% below its high. It has not reclaimed that high in more than 370 days.

The harder question is whether the 43% bounce off the low is the start of something new. That is contested. Our piece on whether the crypto bull run has started lays out the signals that would settle it, and as of its writing they had not lined up.

Crypto Bear Market 2026: Where the Numbers Stand

Peak to low, Bitcoin fell about 52%, which is shallower than the last three bear markets. It also bottomed earlier, roughly nine months after the peak.

1. Rate Hikes and Inflation

The Fed raised rates by 0.25 points to 3.75% to 4.00% on September 16, in a 12 to 0 vote. It was the first hike since July 2023.

The minutes, released October 7, said most participants saw another increase as likely appropriate by year-end. Sixteen of 18 officials projected at least one more.

Yields reacted. The 10-year Treasury hit its highest level since 2002 in early October, and it closed near 5.28% on October 2. The dollar sat near an 18-month high on October 13.

Higher yields raise the bar for assets that pay nothing. They also drain risk appetite. For the mechanics of how traders price each meeting, see our guide to reading Fed meeting prediction markets.

One caution. The hike alone did not crash the market. Bitcoin traded near $75,000 on the day of the September decision and then rose toward $87,000. Rates are a headwind, not the whole story.

The jobs data complicates the picture too. September payrolls rose only 29,000, against roughly 84,000 to 90,000 expected, and unemployment ticked up to 4.2%. That cut the odds of an October hike sharply.

2. ETF Outflows

US spot Bitcoin ETFs hold about $106 billion in assets, roughly 6.35% of Bitcoin’s market value. When they shrink, a large buyer steps back.

October opened with inflows and then reversed. On October 7 alone, $485 million left the funds, with BlackRock’s IBIT, Fidelity’s FBTC and the ARK fund leading the redemptions.

June was the worst month since the funds launched, and it coincided with the cycle low. The August and September inflows, about $6.1 billion combined, arrived as the price recovered.

That pattern cuts both ways. Flows can push price, but they also follow it. Our institutional crypto adoption analysis explains why these funds now matter so much.

3. Leverage and Liquidation Cascades

A liquidation cascade works like this

  1. Traders borrow to buy, using their coins as collateral.
  2. The price dips and the collateral shrinks.
  3. Exchanges force-sell positions that fall below the margin line.
  4. Those forced sales push the price lower.
  5. Lower prices trigger the next round of liquidations.

On October 12, Bitcoin slid from about $84,200 to $81,382. About $771 million of positions were liquidated in 24 hours, and long positions made up $685.6 million of that. Bitcoin futures open interest dropped from about $54.5 billion to $52.7 billion.

The biggest example was October 10, 2025, four days after the peak. Roughly $19 billion was reported liquidated, one of the largest wipeouts on record.

Holding leveraged perpetual positions also costs money while you wait. Our explainer on how Kalshi perps charge a funding rate shows how those costs build up.

4. Geopolitics and Oil

The war involving Iran began in late February, and the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted. Brent trades near $106, up from about $65 in January.

Brent rose about 14% in September and about 42% across the third quarter. The Energy Information Administration now forecasts a fourth-quarter average near $105. The IMF assumes the strait reopens around March 2027.

Oil reaches crypto through inflation. Headline CPI is expected near 3.7% while core is about 2.5%, a gap that points straight at energy. Higher inflation keeps the Fed hawkish, which keeps yields high.

Attacks near the Strait and fighting involving the Houthis kept supply risk alive this week. For how traders priced that risk, see our piece on oil prediction markets and the Hormuz crisis.

5. Cooling Demand and Thin Liquidity

My mood has cooled. A market sentiment index fell from 82 in August to 56 on October 13. Earlier in the year, the Fear & Greed Index hit 5 in February, the lowest reading ever recorded.

Activity has thinned as well. ETF trading volume was $1.23 billion on October 12, against $3.18 billion on October 8. ETF assets slid from $110.77 billion on October 5 to $106.06 billion a week later.

When fewer people trade, each sale moves the price further.

Why Is Crypto Down So Much? Why Altcoins Fall Harder

Altcoins fall harder than Bitcoin, and the gap is wide.

Coin

Ether

XRP

-61.8%

-6.4%

Solana

-62.7%

-7.5%

Four things explain it

  1. Institutional access is concentrated. ETF money flows mainly into Bitcoin, and to a lesser degree Ether.
  2. Order books are thinner. The same sell order moves a smaller coin further.
  3. Leverage is heavier. On October 12, Ether liquidations roughly matched Bitcoin’s, even though Ether’s market is much smaller.
  4. Capital retreats to safety. In a risk-off move, money rotates into Bitcoin and stablecoins first. Bitcoin’s share of the market is near 60%.

This pattern, where coins fall together but unevenly, is what correlation traders study. Our guide to crypto correlation trading with prediction markets covers how it works.

How Long Do Crypto Bear Markets Last?

Past Bitcoin bear markets lasted about a year, from peak to low.

The last three averaged 384 days. This cycle has already passed that mark, yet its low came about nine months in and was far shallower.

Whether June was the final low is the open question, and nobody can answer it. History adds a warning. In 2015 and 2019, relief rallies narrowed Bitcoin’s drawdown to roughly 32% to 34% before prices fell again. Today’s drawdown is about 34%.

Drops have also grown shallower over time as the market has matured. That is a pattern, not a promise.

How Do Crypto Bear Markets End? What to Watch

Bear markets rarely end on a single headline. Several signs tend to appear together:

  1. ETF flows stay positive for weeks, not days.
  2. Yields and the Fed’s path stabilize. The next hints come at the October 27 to 28 meeting, the October jobs report on November 6, and the December 8 to 9 meeting.
  3. Leverage resets. Falling open interest and fewer one-sided liquidations suggest weak hands have gone.
  4. Breadth returns. Bitcoin’s dominance eases and altcoins stop falling harder.
  5. Bitcoin reclaims its prior high. Many analysts treat this as the strictest confirmation.

Event risk will keep rattling markets in the meantime, from inflation prints to Gulf headlines. Some traders use event contracts to offset it, which our guide to geopolitical hedging with prediction markets examines, including its limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is Crypto Down?

Several forces overlap. The Fed hiked rates in September, spot ETFs saw outflows in October, leveraged longs were liquidated, and oil prices are feeding inflation fears. No single factor explains it on its own.

Why Is Crypto Falling?

Higher Treasury yields make non-yielding assets less attractive, and ETF redemptions remove a large buyer. Forced selling from liquidations then adds speed to each drop.

Why Is Crypto Down So Much?

Bitcoin is about 34% below its peak, but altcoins are down roughly 50% to 63%. Thinner order books, heavier leverage and a retreat into Bitcoin and stablecoins make smaller coins fall harder.

Are We in a Crypto Bear Market?

By the common rule of a 20% or greater drop from the peak, yes. Bitcoin is about 34% below its record. Whether the 43% bounce from the June low marks a new bull phase is still contested.

How Long Do Crypto Bear Markets Last?

The last three lasted about 363 to 410 days from peak to low, averaging 384. This cycle has run over 370 days since the peak, though its low arrived earlier and was shallower.

When Will the Crypto Bear Market End?

Nobody knows. Signs that tend to appear together include sustained ETF inflows, a steadier Fed path, reduced leverage, broader participation and a recovery of the prior high. See the list above.

How Do People Approach a Crypto Bear Market?

Approaches vary, and none is risk-free. Prices can fall further, and leverage can wipe out positions quickly. Many people limit position size and avoid borrowing, a discipline our bankroll management guide applies to event contracts.

What Are People Saying About the Crypto Bear Market on Reddit?

Forum threads are opinion and tend to swing with price, so treat them as a mood check, not evidence. A more measurable gauge is the sentiment index, which fell from 82 in August to 56 on October 13.
