According to Chainspect data cited in a Bloomingbit report, Internet Computer is currently one of only two blockchains—alongside Solana—processing more than 1,000 transactions per second (TPS) in real-world conditions.
Beyond live throughput, Internet Computer reports a theoretical maximum capacity of 209,708 TPS, significantly exceeding the performance benchmarks of most Layer 1 competitors. This scalability is enabled by its unique subnet architecture, which horizontally scales the network by adding independent compute shards rather than relying on a single monolithic chain.
Each subnet operates as a self-contained blockchain capable of processing transactions and smart contract execution in parallel. As demand increases, additional subnets can be deployed to expand aggregate throughput, allowing the network to scale without congesting core infrastructure.
The high-performance metrics strengthen ICP’s positioning in discussions around large-scale decentralized applications, particularly those involving AI agents and autonomous on-chain computation. Industry conversations around future infrastructure requirements—including ambitious projections such as Stripe’s vision of handling one billion TPS—have emphasized the need for horizontally scalable architectures.
Real-world TPS validation above 1,000 strengthens ICP’s credibility for enterprise-grade deployments, where throughput, latency, and reliability are critical. As blockchain adoption expands into AI, finance, and large-scale Web3 services, infrastructure capable of sustained high-volume processing may become increasingly essential.
